My name is Chris Carey
I used to be one of the lucky ones. You know, the ones that can’t wait to wake up in the morning to go to work. The ones who put in 60, 70, even 80 hours a week but feel like it was only 20. The ones who really make a difference in peoples lives. For ten years, I owned a construction company. I created things, I made dreams come alive, I made a difference. I was able to sell my company and for the next ten years was even luckier. I was a small business trainer and I taught others how to create things, and make their dreams come true. I loved what I did ‘cause I did what I loved. Life was great! And then the economy turned and I had to get a JOB. You know, the 9-to-5 grind, the case of the Mondays, the TGIF. Minutes seemed like hours, hours seemed like weeks. I lived in Richmond, my Job was in DC. I never saw my wife, I never saw my kids. I got old, I got weak, I got fat. I lost my drive, I lost my passion. Life sucked! …………….And then I found CrossFit!
My first workout had pull-ups, push-ups and burpees – and I could barely do any of them. What the hell! I was a college athlete. I used to have burpees for breakfast and one-arm pushups for lunch. But instead of feeling bad, the support and competitive spirit of the others in the box drove me on. I couldn’t wait to wake up at 5am and do it again. I soon found myself going to the box twice a day. Work trips and vacations became an excuse to find another box and add to the growing collection of CrossFit shirts. From Vegas to Virginia, Florida to Frankfurt, I saw people making a difference and dreams coming to life. I felt younger, I got stronger. Life was looking up, but I needed more. I converted my garage into a mini box and my kids started doing CrossFit. Calls to them during the week went from one minute homework nags to thirty minute WOD brags. Weekend Netflix binging gave way to YouTube Oly technique videos. My middle son got an internship with the James Madison Strength and Conditioning staff and became a CrossFit Level-1 trainer. My younger son started bringing over his high school football teammates to the garage for “real” workouts. I became a USA weightlifting certified level-1 and 2 Sport Performance coach and obtained the CrossFit Level-1 and 2 Trainer certificate. I enrolled in the CrossFit Football course and began studying for the NSCA CSCS certification. I regained my drive, I found my passion. My name is Christopher Carey and I once again want to be one of the lucky ones. You know, the ones who can’t wait to wake up in the morning to go to work. The ones who put in 80 hours but feel like its 20. The ones who really make a difference in people’s lives; helping them achieve newfound strength, newfound relationships, newfound drive, newfound passion. You know, a CrossFit Affiliate…..CrossFit NewFound!
